What Headphones to Buy 2024 (Sub $200 USD)
As 2023 comes to a close and we step into the realm of 2024, let us reflect on the world of headphones and how it’s evolved to cater to various preferences, needs and budgets be it gamer, office worker, or simply somebody that wishes to take their music on the go. Whether you’re an audiophile seeking the pinnacle of sound quality, a budget-conscious consumer looking to see what your options are, or someone with specific usage scenarios in mind, the headphones market has something for everyone. In fact, the headphone market is so vast I feel the need to limit this blog post to only headphones that fall below $200 USD or else this post might wear out its welcome. So without further ado here are the recommendations.
A Personal Favorite
To start off we have the Sennheiser HD 599 Open Back Headphones. In terms of design, these headphones have an attractive ivory color scheme and come equipped with a comfortable padded headband and luxurious velour-covered ear pads meant to ensure comfort over an extended period of time while minimizing pressure on the ears. I consider that to be the greatest strength of these headphones, the fact that you can wear them for such an extended period of time makes them absolutely perfect for long gaming sessions and time spent sitting at a computer in the office. As for more technical aspects, the HD 559 provides multiple connectivity options, including a 3-meter detachable cable featuring a 6.3 millimeter jack and additional 1.2 meter detachable cable with 3.5 millimeter jack. As for the audio components, the transducers use aluminum voice coils that Sennheiser claims deliver excellent dynamics and extremely low distortion. The audio quality on these is extremely solid, though I’m aware certain individuals find it lacking in terms of bass (at least in comparison to some more expensive options). As for price, these headphones come in at $129.95 USD currently on amazon which isn’t crazy when you consider the entire headphone market as a whole but could be seen as a little bit pricey. Overall, I’d say these are a great option if you want something comfortable to wear for hours at a desk while also looking absolutely incredible with that brown ivory color scheme.

The High End Option
Our high end choice in this price range has to go to the DT 770 Pro Over-Ear Studio Headphones. These closed over-ear headphones bring a lot to the table, especially for those users looking for a professional option in music production. It goes without saying the sound quality on these is absolutely superb. With exceptional impulse response and bass reference capabilities it’s a great option for any user in need of audio monitoring purposes. Even if you don’t plan on monitoring sound in a studio though, these headphones are still incredible for day-to-day use thanks to the fact they offer high wearing comfort with soft velour ear pads and a strong durable design. The headphones come equipped with a single-side cable that measures 3.0 meters coiled, giving you plenty of length to stand up and move around without worrying about length or tangled cables. The headphones also come with a protective case and a 6.35 mm jack adapter. The best part is that you can get all this for $169 USD on Amazon, and sometimes you can get it on sale for $159 USD on Amazon. Either way, the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Studio Headphones is sure to be a great choice even for the most picky audiophiles out there.

The On-The-Go Option
Now sometimes you don’t have the ability to sit in front of a desk for your audio listening needs and need a companion for those times when you’re on the move. If that’s you then you should consider the Sennheiser HD 450 BT Bluetooth 5.0 Wireless Headphones. Equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology, as well as support for AAC and AptX low latency codecs, you’re sure to have a seamless dependable connection wherever you go. The other thing that makes these headphones absolutely great for traveling is the active noise cancellation, so you won’t have to worry about your listening experience being interrupted by unwanted background noise. Plus the headphones have an impressive 30-hour battery life making them perfect for long traveling sessions where you won’t have a chance to recharge often. When you do have a chance to recharge though it won’t take long thanks to the added convenience of USB-C fast charging capabilities, which comes as an included component along with a carry case that isn’t too bulky thanks to the headphones foldable design. As for additional features, these headphones come equipped with a virtual assistant button for both Siri and Google Assistant as well as the Sennheiser App, which provides an equalizer, Podcast Mode, and consistent Firmware updates. Normally the Sennheiser HD 450BT goes for around $99.95 USD on Amazon, but can often be found on sale for around $90 USD. Regardless of what price it is though, you won’t regret paying for what it brings to the table if you find yourself constantly on the go.

For Those On a Budget
Of course not everybody is an audiophile looking for absolutely insane sound quality but still wants something that brings a lot to the table on a slightly more affordable budget without compromising on value. For those users, we recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M20X as our cheapest option. At a price point of $49 USD on Amazon these headphones are substantially cheaper than a lot of the others in this blog post, but despite that they still pack a punch. Despite being cheaper they still bring great sound quality for all your listening needs, and surprisingly hold up really well with daily use. Of course, if you’re willing to spend more you could always go for the ATH-M40X instead. We recommend this as a solid upgrade simply because it’s incredibly similar to the M20X but offers slightly better sound quality. Of course that improved audio does come at a cost, with the M40x setting you back $99 USD on Amazon but if you’re willing to spend that little bit extra it is something to keep in mind, especially if you can find the M40x on sale.
